Medicare Supplements are the cadillac of senior insurance plans, although some confuse Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Health Plans), with Medicare Supplements, they couldn't be more different.  Medicare Supplement plans in Wisconsin are standardized in a different way than most of the country (Medicare and You 2014), it has the Base policy and riders that can be added to pay for different Medicare costs, such as deductibles.  The Base plan must provide a core set of benefits by all insurers who offer it, each company can charge a different rate but the benefits MUST BE THE SAME.  A very good source of information for this is The Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, it has the full outline of basic coverages and all the riders that can be added for Medicare Supplements in Wisconsin.
Just click on the picture to the left to visit the site for Wisconsin's laws and mandates concerning Medicare Supplements, and for a general overview do not forget to read your Medicare and You booklet.  You do not need to take an Agents word for it, do a little research and make sure that what is being offered is what is right for you.  If you are overwhelmed or just want some clarification, give us a call and we will point you in the right direction.

With all things having to be equal, it basically comes down to pricing, who has the best price for my age and area.  That is why I recommend that all my clients do a Medicare Supplement Review at the very least every two years.  LJM Insurance carries several Medicare Supplement providers for the very reason that it is not one size fits all when it comes to getting the very best pricing for your situation.  We hear all the time how people are happy with their provider "they pay their bills" well they don't have a choice.  Every provider must offer the same benefits, and pay claims according to state and federal mandates.  If you are reasonably healthy and can pass underwriting there is no reason to pay $30.00 to $70.00 a month more for a product that by law must be exactly the same in all aspects.

Next month I will go over the riders and what the Basic plan must offer, until then enjoy the weather and get outside.
